Non-contact bone assessment using airborne ultrasound Shinnosuke HIRATA In ultrasonic bone assessment, the bone quantity is estimated based on the speed of sound or frequency characteristic of attenuation in the cancellous bone. In the typical devices, the both sides of heel are firmly held by ultrasonic transducers. Therefore, the estimation may not be possible depending on the size and shape of the heel. In this research project, we investigate a non-contact method for bone assessment using airborne ultrasound passed through the heel.
