Research Subject

Multiscale ultrasound tissue characterization

In general ultrasonic diagnosis, ultrasound waves of several MHz are radiated into the body from the body surface and visualization of ultrasonic information reflected from various tissues (echo) is performed, but its resolution is limitting about 1 mm. In my research, we observed the same living tissue by the frequency from several MHz to hundreds MHz band, and finding the frequency dependency of the intrinsic properties in various tissues in the microstructure below the cells (micro meter scale) and the mixture of multiple tissues (mili meter scale). It can be understand the characteristics of tissue such as moorphology, structure, activity, inflammation, alteration, acoustic characteristics, mechanical properties, etc. with a desired resolution by using an arbitrary frequency band by indexing the property of echo in the macro structure.

Quantitative indexing of ultrasonic diagnosis

In order to realize multiscale diagnosis, it is indispensable to develop numerous elementary procedures. For example, we proposed multiple signal analysis methods to evaluate the scattering characteristics in living tissue from the propagation characteristics of echo signal for the evaluation of macrostructure. Additionaly, in order to evaluate the microphysical properties of living tissues, we developed a ultrasound scanner that can observe the tissue in wide area by super wide frequency band. We aim to establish quantitative indicators for ultrasonic diagnosis independent of equipment and settings by implementing these in collaboration with a large number of researchers in Japan and overseas.
