TITLE

Development of a Novel Non-invasive Sensory Substitution Scheme for Prosthetic Applications Using Auditory Display

ABSTRACT

Upper limb prosthetic technology is advancing rapidly and the best prosthetic hands available nowadays are lightweight and capable of high dexterity.
However, the human-machine interface for these devices is not yet complete, which results in complications for the amputee. Most of the research in this area is focused on developing methods to detect the movement intention of the amputee (feedforward), but conveying the sensory information (touch, position) of the robot hand back to the amputee (feedback) is often neglected.
In this presentation I will be discussing my work in sensory substitution systems for prosthetic applications and how these systems could improve the control of a prosthetic hand. Also, I will discuss my work in non-invasive intention detection systems for upper limb prosthesis. Furthermore, I will talk about my research efforts in Functional Electrical Stimulation as an aid for lower limb hemiplegic patients.
