ABSTRACT

High-frequency-ultrasound annular arrays provide an ideal balance between system simplicity and image quality and they are particularly well suited to applications where shallow penetration (1 to 3 cm) and reduced lateral imaging distance (1 to 3 cm) are typical. An annular-array imaging system was developed using 20- or 40-MHz, five-element array transducers made from piezopolymer films bonded to a copper-clad polyimide backing. The system has been continually improved in terms of transducer assembly, imaging speed, control software, excitation, etc., and the current prototype is now capable of real-time imaging on the order of 2-10 fps. An overview of the construction and operational verification of the annular-array transducer will be given followed by a summary of how ultrasound data is acquired from the device and formed into images. Some key areas of current work will be highlighted including human-subject ophthalmic imaging, 3D segmentation of mouse embryo brain ventricles and high-frame-rate retrospective, in vivo imaging of adult mouse and mouse embryo hearts. In addition, a photoacoustic mode has been added to the system in order to obtain data from in utero mouse embryos.
