ABSTRACT

8.2 million people die each year from cancer, an estimated 13% of all deaths worldwide and the increase in new cases of cancer expected over the next 2 decades is as high as 70%. In Singapore, about 37 people are diagnosed with cancer every day. Colorectal is a common cancer in men (17.2%) whereas breast cancer is a common one in women (29.2%). In Japan, Japanese have a 20.4% chance of developing cancer and a 9.7% chance of dying from it. The common forms of cancer that are more prevalent in Japan are prostate (18%, for male), breast (21%, for female), stomach (16% for male and 10% for female), and colon/rectum cancer (14% for both male and female). Early detections of cancers significantly increase the survival rate. Electrical property of human tissue is a sensitive indicator for cancers of different organs, especially when they are measured in vivo. The study of in vivo electrical properties of human tissues in the Biomedical – Electromagnetic group at SUTD will be presented. It includes the recent advancement in Magnetic Resonance Electrical Property Tomography (MREPT) with which MREPT is being proposed to be a tool for in vivo measurements of electrical properties of human tissues, including those in small compartments. It enables the measurement of electrical properties of cancerous tissues especially at their early stages when the volume is small. It also includes the effort of building up a database of electrical properties of continuously growing tumor, using zebrafish.
