ABSTRACT
Cross-frequency coupling (CFC) generally labels the interaction between two components at different frequencies in the brain. Many empirical evidences have been reported on the synchronization of bursts, i.e., short periods, of high frequency oscillations at the trough of specific low frequency oscillations.Several quantification methods have been already implemented to estimate the strength of such interaction. Besides, they commonly rely on a well-accepted synthetic model of CFC signal that is presented here. Then, the talk will give a useful interpretation of that synthetic signal as a coupled pair of amplitude-modulated signals and recall well-established decoding techniques from the analog modulation theory that can be efficiently used to decode, i.e., extract, the low and the high frequency components from the raw coupled signal. Finally, a comparison of the decoding performance between the new approach and a widely-used one, will be provided together with suggestions how to properly select the model parameters and to interprete results of the CFC quantification.
